QS have released their Emerging Europe and Central Asia university rankings which now ranks 350 institutions. The rankings are dominated by Russia with Lomonosov Moscow State University, Saint Petersburg State University and Novosibersk State University taking the top three spots. However, institutions in the Czech Republic, Poland and Turkey also performed well. Charles University in Prague reached fifth place, Czech Technical University in Prague ninth and Masaryk University tenth. Jagiellonian University in Kraków was sixth and the University of Warsaw seventh. There were five Turkish universities in the top twenty although none in the top ten.
Central Asian universities did not do so well. Although a total of 24 institutions from Kazakhstan were ranked Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was the only one to reach the top twenty. There were only two from Kyrgyzstan, one from Uzbekistan, and none from Turkmenistan or Tajikistan.
The methodology of the rankings is based on the QS World University Rankings with some additions and modifications. The indicators are:
- Academic reputation (30%)
- Employer reputation (20%)
- Faculty/student ratio (10%)
- Papers per faculty (10%)
- International research network (10%)
- Web impact (5%)
- Staff with a PhD (5%)
- Citations per paper (5%)
- International faculty and international students (5%).
