A report by the world intellectual property organisation has revealed that China, Japan and South Korea are making remarkable progress in Artificial Intelligence (AI) research. The report covers areas such as machine learning, speech learning, telecommunications and transportation. Research in AI is booming reflected in a massive increase in publications, inventions and patents. Machine learning, computer vision and robotics are growing strongly. Private companies are in the lead for AI patenting activity led by IBM, followed by Microsoft, Toshiba, Samsung and NEC. The State Grid Corporation of China has just entered the top twenty for AI patent filings.

uniRank is a higher education directory and search engine that incorporates web-based non-academic rankings. The objective is to compare the web presence and popularity of institutions. It is based on an algorithm that includes five metrics: Moz Domain Authority, Alexa Global Rank, SimilarWeb Global Rank, Majestic Referring Domains, and Majestic Trust Flow. Although this ranking is explicitly non-academic it is often referred to in countries which have few universities in conventional research-based rankings. It is also the only ranking to include North Korean universities.

In the latest edition of Shanghai Ranking’s Best Chinese Universities Rankings there are four clusters of indicators; Teaching and Learning, Research, Social Services, and Internationalization. The top five universities overall are:

  1. Tsinghua University, Beijing
  2. Peking University, Beijing
  3. Zhejiang University, Hangzhou
  4. Shanghai Jiao Tong University
  5. Fudan University, Shanghai.

The ranking web of world universities is published twice yearly by the Cybermetrics Lab, a branch of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, the leading Spanish research institute. This ranking has the unique virtue of including any institution with any pretension to be a university. The latest edition includes over 28,000.

The US News & World Report has announced the eighth edition of its Best Online Programs Rankings. There are a variety of tables including online bachelor’s programs, online graduate programs in subjects such as accounting, computer science and project management, online MBA and graduate business programs and online criminal justice, engineering and nursing programs.

An article in the Japan Times by Takamitsu Sawa, a Professor at Shiga University, points out that Japanese universities have declined in the Times Higher Education (THE) world rankings relative to those in China. The article notes that Chinese universities have continued to rise in these rankings while those in Japan have performed less well. This is despite the Prime Minister’s declaration in 2013 that there would be ten Japanese universities in the top 100 within ten years.It appears unlikely that this target will be achieved since leading Japanese universities have been slipping since 2013.
