The 2013 QS World University Rankings by Subject, published today on, reveals the top 200 universities in the world for 30 disciplines including degree subjects such as economics, civil engineering, physics, law and others.

At the Executive Committee meeting in Paris, Jan Sadlak, the President of IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence announced the admission of six new members to the organization. The total membership stands now at 34. Here are the new members: Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland), L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (Astana, Kazakhstan), University of Bucharest (Romania), Expert RA Rating Agency (Moscow, Russia), National University for Political & Administrative Studies (Bucharest, Romania) and the National Center of Public Accreditation (Yoshkar-Ola, Russian Federation).

The new edition of the Ranking Web of Universities also known as Webometrics Rankings covering over 21000 higher education institutions in the world was published by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the largest public research body in Spain (CSIC). The ranking is based on data collected the first days of January.

U-Multirank, a new university ranking system was launched under the Irish EU Presidency in Dublin by Ruairí Quinn, TD, Minister for Education and Skills and European Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou.

The Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (Benelux-Bureau voor Intellectuele Eigendom) registered the IREG Observatory name and logo providing them legal protection.

Awarding academic achievements has been an integral part of academic culture even before the Nobel Prize was established in 1901. The Copley Medal – the oldest award has been regularly awarded for achievements in natural sciences by The Royal Society since 1731. It is quite surprising that this aspect of academic excellence has been so little studied… at least until now. A renewed attention to international academic awards has in recent years been associated with elaboration of university rankings.
