uniRank is a higher education directory and search engine that incorporates web-based non-academic rankings. The objective is to compare the web presence and popularity of institutions. It is based on an algorithm that includes five metrics: Moz Domain Authority, Alexa Global Rank, SimilarWeb Global Rank, Majestic Referring Domains, and Majestic Trust Flow. Although this ranking is explicitly non-academic it is often referred to in countries which have few universities in conventional research-based rankings. It is also the only ranking to include North Korean universities.

Universities are not ranked if they do not have an official website, the official domain is not reachable, or they use an internal URL as the official website.

There is a lot of overlap between uniRank and better-known rankings although it does favour large public universities.

The top five universities in the world are:

  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  2. Harvard University
  3. Stanford University
  4. University of California Berkeley
  5. University of Michigan.

The top universities in selected regions and countries are:

Latin America; Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

Europe; University of Oxford

Africa; University of Pretoria

Asia; Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Oceania; University of New South Wales

Arabic-speaking; King Saud University

Brazil; Universidade de São Paulo

Russia; Moscow State University

India; Indian Institute of Technology Madras.
