The CSRankings show that China is on the way to dominate research in Artificial Intelligence.

These rankings are produced by Emery Berger, a Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and are derived from dblp, an online database of computer science publications started by the University of Trier and now maintained by Schloss Dagstuhl–Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik at Saarland University.

US universities continue to hold the lead overall. For publications over a five-year period from 2014 to 2018, the first place is easily held by Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania, followed by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

There is, however, increasing competition from East Asia. Tsinghua University is in 7th place, Peking University and the National University of Singapore are joint 18th while the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Hong Kong University of Science and technology, Nanyang Technological University, Seoul National University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Nanjing University are all in the top fifty.

It is noticeable that no university from India, Central Asia or the Middle East has made it into the top one hundred and there are only two African universities, both in South Africa, anywhere in the rankings

Turning to the various branches of the critical field of AI, the Chinese challenge is even stronger. Tsinghua holds the top spot for Artificial intelligence and for the Web and information retrieval, Peking University for Natural language processing, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences for Computer vision. Carnegie Mellon, however, still leads for Machine learning.
