The Washington Monthly has published the latest edition of its student-centred College Guide and Rankings. The methodology of these rankings of US colleges and universities feature ssocial mobility, research performance, and community and national service. These three criteria are given equal weighting.

Social mobility is measured by graduation rates, the gap between low income Pell students and others, the number of Pell students receiving degrees, the percentage of students in receipt of these grants, enrolment of first generation students, the percentage of first generation students, net prices paid by students, median earnings of students ten years after graduation, and repayment of students loans.

The research score is based on research spending, the number of undergraduates eventually receiving PhDs, faculty receiving awards, and faculty with membership in National Academies. The weighting is different for research universities and liberal arts colleges.

The community service score is based on five measures: military service, alumni in the Peace Corps, expenditure on community service projects, the allocation of funds to students completing national service, and voting by students.

The top five national universities are:

  1. Stanford University, California
  2. Harvard University, Massachusetts
  3. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  4. Yale University, Connecticut
  5. Duke University, North Carolina.
