Al Fanar Media has reviewed the process of international accreditation of universities in the Middle East and has published a list of accredited programs.

Arab and Turkish universities are attempting to establish an international presence and have turned to international accreditation agencies in Europe and North America in an attempt to guarantee the quality of their programs.

The list published by Al Fanar includes accreditation by agencies such as the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in the USA, the Joint Board of Moderators, and the Accreditation Service for Schools, Colleges and Universities in the UK and the Akkreditierungsagentur für Studiengänge der Ingenieurwissenschaften der Informatik der Naturwissenschaften und der Mathematik in Germany.

Accreditations are not spread evenly across the region. The top five countries for number of accreditations are of Saudi Arabia (162), United Arab Emirates (111), Turkey (72), Lebanon (53) and Kuwait (42).

On the other hand, Yemen, Algeria, the Comoros, Palestine, Djibouti, Syria, Libya, Mauritania and Somalia have no international accreditations at all.
