The latest table from Reuters Top 100: Europe’s Most Innovative Universities shows little change from last year. The top university is the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) in the Flanders region of Belgium. Overall, the most innovative European universities are found in France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium.

The criteria used to construct the ranking are:

Patent Volume, Patent Success and Global Patents; data provided by Derwent World Patents Index and Derwent innovations Index

Patents Citation Impact, Percent of Patents Cited, Patent to Article Citation Impact, Industry Article Citation Impact; data from Patents Citation Index, Derwent World Patents Index, Web of Science Core Collection

Percent of Industry Collaborative Articles and Total Web of Science Core Collection Papers; data from Web of Science Core Collection.

The indicators are weighted equally except for Patent citation impact and Percent of patents Cited which receive a half weighting each.

The top ten universities this year are:

  1. KU Leuven, Belgium
  2. University of Erlangen Nuremberg, Germany
  3. Imperial College London, UK
  4. University of Cambridge, UK
  5. EPFL – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne
  6. University College London, UK
  7. Technical University of Munich, Germany
  8. University of Manchester, UK
  9. University of Zurich, Switzerland
  10. Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich.
