A major trend over the last few years has been the growing awareness of rankings in countries and regions that previously had shown little interest. This was addressed during the second day of IREG 2019 Conference in Bologna. A session on the role of rankings in Latin America was led by Luiz Claudio Costa, President of the IREG Observatory and former Minister of Education of Brazil. The speakers were Jacques Marcovitch, former Rector of the University of Sāo Paolo, Sabine Righetti, Coordinator of the Brazilian National Ranking, and Fernando Leon Garcia, of the Cetys University System of Mexico.

Discussion on the relationship between rankings and the media was chaired by Martin Ince of the Global Academic Advisory Board with presentations by Gianna Fregonara of Corriere della Sera, Simona Bizzonera of QS, and Richard Holmes of University Ranking Watch.

Mirko Degli Esposti, Vice Rector of the University of Bologna chaired a session that dealt with the semantic interpretation of ranking indicators and the alignment of data collection. There were papers from Hasselt University, the University of Bologna, CWTS Leiden University, and the Italian National Agency for Evaluations of Universities and Research Institutes.

The Forum closed with a presentation of the venue for the IREG 2020 Conference to be held at Beijing University of Technology in Beijing, China in October 2020.
