Germany has been a major contributor to research in computer science, especially in the field of interaction between humans and computers. At present, the leading conference is, according to Google Scholar, the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), which is organised by the Association for Computing Machinery and has a very low acceptance rate for conference papers.
The Media Computing Group has constructed a ranking based on conference proceedings since 2003 of German institutions ordered by the number of archival publications. This provides insight into the current standing of German universities and research centres.
The top ten institutions are:
- Ludwig Maximilian University Munich
- Saarland Informatics Campus
- University of Stuttgart
- Hasso Plattner Institute Potsdam
- RWTH Aachen University
- University of Siegen
- TU Berlin
- Telekom Innovation Laboratories Berlin
- University Duisberg-Essen
- Ulm University.
