Recently there has been growing interest in measuring and comparing the social contribution of universities. The new Russian Three Missions University Rankings includes a group of metrics entitled University and Society and the Universitas Indonesia Greenmetric ranking covers contributions to environmental sustainability.
Times Higher Education (THE) have just announced that they are developing a new global ranking that will measure how far universities are meeting the sustainable development goals announced by the United Nations in 2016.
There are 17 goals, the first five of which are No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-Being, Quality Education, and Gender Equality.
THE are planning to assess contributions to 11 goals for the first edition of the ranking and eventually to cover all 17.
They are planning to use data collected by Elsevier and submitted by universities to create a ranking based on the universities’ best four or five indicators. It is intended to announce the first ranking, which will be prepared in partnership with Vertigo Ventures, at the Innovation and Impact Summit to be held in South Korea in April of next year.
