The website THEBESTSCHOOLS has published a global ranking of 100 universities based on the international academic influence of faculty and alumni. It claims that “if you are looking for a ranking with a focus on academic prestige, scholarly excellence, and sheer intellectual horsepower, then this is the ranking you want.”
The ranking is based on data derived from several Internet sources such as the Notable Names Database and Wikidata and the influence of academics is calculated by a proprietary algorithm.
This ranking gives a boost to universities with strengths in the social sciences and humanities such as the University of Chicago, in 3rd place, and reduces the advantage given to institutions strong in STEM subjects such as the California Institute of Technology, in 38th place.
The top five universities are:
- Harvard University
- University of California Berkeley
- University of Chicago
- University of Michigan
- Columbia University.
The top 100 includes 55 institutions in the USA, 15 in the UK, eight in Germany and three each in Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.
The top university outside the USA is Cambridge in ninth place and the top Asian university is the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. There are no Chinese or Korean universities. Although the University of Buenos Aires and the National Autonomous University of mexico are included the University of Sao Paulo, which does well in other rankings, is absent.
