The web-based US News publication has just released data that looks at excellence from another angle by comparing the financial resources of universities, measured by spending per student on teaching-related activities, with their overall scores. The results are considered a measure of operating efficiency. Only those institutions in the top half of the ‘America’s Best Colleges’ rankings are ranked
The best performing universities and colleges are not the Ivy League schools or well-known state universities. They tend to be smaller institutions from lower down the rankings.
The top five national universities are:
- Miami University Oxford, Ohio
- Florida State University
- Brigham Young University Provo, Utah
- San Diego state University, California
- Binghamton University SUNY.
The top national five liberal arts colleges are:
- College of St Benedict, Minnesota
- Hope College, Michigan
- Augustana College, Illinois
- Rhodes College, Tennessee
- Virginia Military Institute.
The US News has published its ranking of American college and universities for over three decades. There has been some criticism that it discriminates in favour of old rich institutions that can afford to admit the most able students and recruit large numbers of teachers and productive researchers.
