An independent panel of Vietnamese academics has produced the country’s first national ranking of universities. Most of the data is from university websites.
There are three criteria:
Scientific Research measured by the number of articles in the ISI databases, citations, and the number of articles per faculty (40% weighting)
Education and Training measured by number of undergraduate and postgraduate students, number pf PhDs in the faculty, and students’ university entrance scores (40% weighting),
Institutional Facilities and Government including lecture halls, library books and response to requests for information (20% weighting).
According to an article in University World News by Ly Pham of the Vietnam National University the ranking has provoked considerable controversy. For example, there was surprise that Hue University received a high score for quality of education although it has relatively low admission standards. On the other hand, Hanoi University of Technology had a low rank although it is recognized for its advanced facilities.
The top ten universities are:
- Hanoi National University
- Ton Thuc Dang University
- Academy of Agriculture
- Da Nang University
- National University of Ho Chi Minh City
- Can Tho University
- Hanoi University of Technology
- Hue University
- Duy Tan University
- Hanoi Pedagogical University.
Ton Thuc Dang University received the highest score for Scientific Research and Hanoi National University was in first place for Education and Training and Facilities and Governance.
