The US News has just published the latest edition of America’s Best Colleges. Princeton continues to hold first place among the best national universities and Williams College is first among national liberal arts colleges.
The methodology, which emphasises student outcomes and academic excellence, has been slightly revised this year. The prediction of expected graduation rates now takes account of the proportion of students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects. There has also been a change in calculating the affordability of Best Colleges for Veterans. In addition, postgraduate salary information is now available although it is not used to calculate the rankings.
The US News reported that California institutions and service academies generally did well with University of California (UC) Los Angeles joining UC Berkeley at the top of the index of top public national universities and the US Military Academy at the top of national liberal arts colleges.
The top seven national universities are:
1. Princeton University
2. Harvard University
3= University of Chicago
3= Yale University
5= Columbia University
5= Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
5= Stanford University

Campus Ethnic Diversity; Andrews University, Michigan
Historically Black Colleges and Universities; Spelman College
Most Innovative Schools; Arizona State University Tempe
Best Colleges or Veterans; Stanford University.
