Universitas 21 is an international organisation of 25 research orientated universities whose members include Fudan university, the University of Queensland, the University of Johannesburg, University College Dublin, the University of Maryland and Tecnológico de Monterrey. This is a ranking of higher education systems. There are four groups of indicators: Resources, Environment, Connectivity and Output.

Four groups of indicators

  • Resources (20%) including government expenditure on tertiary education, total expenditure, annual expenditure per student, research and development expenditure as a percentage of GDP and per head of population
  • Environment (20%) including proportion of female students and academic staff, data quality, policy environment and survey responses.
  • Connectivity (20%) including international students and research collaborators, Webometrics data, survey responses and industrial collaborators
  • Output (40%) including total articles and articles per head of population, impact measures by citations, institutions in the Shanghai Academic ranking of World Universities, enrolments in tertiary education, population with tertiary qualifications, number of researchers and graduate employment.

  3. United Kingdom
  4. Denmark
  5. Sweden.

The top five countries for resources are:

  1. Sweden
  2. Denmark
  3. Canada
  4. Singapore
  5. Switzerland

The top five countries for environment are:

  1. United States
  2. New Zealand
  3. Australia
  4. Singapore
  5. United Kingdom

The top five countries for connectivity are:

  1. Switzerland
  2. United Kingdom
  3. Austria
  4. Denmark
  5. Netherlands

The top five countries for output are:

  1. United States
  2. United Kingdom
  3. Australia
  4. Denmark
  5. Sweden

The top five countries overall after controlling for level of economic development are:

  1. Serbia
  2. United Kingdom
  3. South Africa
  4. Denmark
  5. Sweden

The purpose of the IREG Guidelines for Stakeholders of Academic Rankings is to provide recommendations for appropriate interpretations, uses and applications of rankings by potential interested parties, including students and parents, institutions of higher education, policymakers, quality assurance and funding organizations, employers and the media. Specific recommendations have been formulated for each group of stakeholders.

The worldwide ranking UI GreenMetric Workshop in Bologna

This Bologna workshop is aimed to highlight the commitment of Italian universities towards a sustainable 360° approach. UI GM Chairperson, Riri Fitri Sari, will showcase the ranking’s structure and indicators in details. Italian participants are warmly invited to ask questions and raise issues concerning the specificity of the Italian universities to fit into the UI GreenMetric ranking. The Alma Mater Studiorum assumes the role of National Network Hub for UI GM in the framework of this event that will also host experts from RUS (Rete delle Università per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile).

Ranking conference in Warsaw

Polish universities feel, they deserve a better place in international rankings. To discuss what can and should be done to improve the quality of research, rectors of best universities in the country gathered 1-2 December in Warsaw at the conference “Polish Universities in International Perspective – Rankings and Strategic Management of University” organized by Perspektywy Education Foundation jointly with the Conference of Rectors (CRASP) and Polish Accreditation Commission (PAC).
