Ukrainian National Ranking “Top 200 Ukraine released, for the seventh time, the results of the ranking of leading public and private higher education institutions in Ukraine. For the fourth consecutive year, the NTUU “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” leads the ranking table. In spite of the top five positions are permanently being occupied by Kyiv National University named after Shevchenko (the second place), Kharkiv National University named after Karazin (the third place), National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” (the fourth place), National Medical University named after Bogomolets (the fifh place) Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute has got closer to them. The last one is able to change the top charter by improving continuously the performance indicators. National University “Lviv Polytechnics” confidently entered the top-10, having moved from 11th to 8th place.

The ranking methodology of “Top 200 Ukraine” focused on four broad criteria: perceptions of institutional performance from the perspective of employers and general academic reputation, the quality of research and teaching capacity, the overall quality of the education delivered, and institutions’ international recognition and presence in the “global information space” is sound and similar to a number of other national rankings.

The 7th edition of “Top 200 Ukraine” ranking results of leading public and private higher education institutions in Ukraine demonstrated National University Ranking had confirmed in a relatively short period of time its relevance as an instrument of information, quality assessment and enhancing transparency of the national system of higher education.

During the development and establishment of the project the ranking methodology was constantly being adopted to the requirements of international and Ukrainian realities. Periodically that methodology was discussed at the IREG Observatory meetings.

Despite early resistance, “Top 200” now is generally accepted in all target audiences allowing various stakeholders to place the performance of Ukrainian institutions into local as well as broader global context.

The successful development of ranking systems including TOP 200 Ukraine provides a further search for mechanisms to improve the methods and procedures of ranking, selection of adequate and accurate data. These and other issues were discussed on May, 2013 at the IREG Forum in Warsaw “ Methodologies under Scrutiny”.

As Olesya Lynovytska, Member of the Executive Committee of IREG Observatory stressed: - «Only responsible co-operation and mutual confidence between universities and creators of ranking systems will allow to improve those systems, taking into account needs of society, employers and academy community».
