Reuter’s have announced the World ‘s Innovative Universities. This ranking measures the contribution of universities to technology through patents and articles.  It shows that some of the world’s most prestigious institutions are falling behind. Yale, for example is 20th and Princeton 65th while Oxford and Cambridge are well behind Katholieke Universiteit (KU) Leuven in Belgium which is in seventh place. US universities comprise nearly half of the top 100 universities. There are also nine German, eight French, six British, six South Korean, six Japanese, four Chinese, three Swiss, three Netherland, two Belgium, two Canadian, two Israeli, two Singaporean and one Danish.

Th rest of the world is unrepresented. The list does not include any universities from Latin American, Eastern Europe, Africa, South and Central Asia or the Middle East outside Israel.

The top universities in this year’s ranking are:

  1. Stanford University
  2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  3. Harvard University
  4. University of Pennsylvania
  5. University of Washington
  6. University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
  7. KU Leuven
  8. University of Southern California
  9. Cornell University
  10. Imperial College London.

The ranking is based on the following indicators: patent volume, patent success, global patents, patent citations, patent citation impact, percent of patents cited, patent to article citation impact, industry article citation impact, percent of industry collaborative articles, and total Web of Science Core Collection Papers.
