The latest Times High Education (THE) World Academic Summit, held in Switzerland in partnership with ETH Zurich, saw the announcement of the largest THE World university rankings, including over 1400 universities, some from countries previously unrepresented such as Brunei, Vietnam and Cuba.

The methodology was unchanged with five pillars:

  • Teaching (the learning environment) [30% weighting] including teaching reputation, staff-to-student ratio, doctorate-to-bachelor’s ratio, doctorates-awarded-to- academic- staff ratio, institutional income
  • Research (volume, income and reputation) [30%] including research reputation, research income, research productivity
  • Citations (research influence) [30%]
  • International outlook (staff, students and research} [7.5%]
  • Industry income (knowledge transfer) [2.5%].

The top universities overall and for the five pillars this year are:

Overall; University of Oxford, UK

Teaching; Stanford University, USA

Research; University of Oxford,

Citations; Aswan University, Egypt

Industry income; Anadolu University, Turkey

International outlook; University of Luxembourg.

Duncan Ross, Chief Data Officer at THE, has indicated a number of changes planned or already implemented for the various rankings. The Global Impact Rankings will be expanded to include all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and new indicators were included in the recent Europe, Japan and US Teaching Rankings.

He also announced that THE will be introducing a new methodology for the World University Rankings. Among the changes being considered are moving from the average value of papers in the field weighted citations indicator to the 75th percentile. which would reduce the advantage of highly cited papers with many contributors, and also including the proportion of most cited papers.
