The European Research ranking is based on information provided by the European Commission. The 2018 ranking has just been published after a delay for technical reasons. The ranking measures the research funding and networking of European universities and research centres. There are three indicators: funding and project participation performance, network activity and alliances, and diversity of research areas.

The objective of the ranking is “to increase transparency of research funding within the European Research Area. It may help to understand European funding policies, to identify research alliances, to understand the cash flow among European countries and institutions and how much money is spent for scientific research.”

The top ten countries overall are:

  1. Germany
  2. United Kingdom
  3. France
  4. Spain
  5. Italy
  6. Netherlands
  7. Belgium
  8. Switzerland
  9. Sweden
  10. Austria

The top five educational institutions are:

  1. Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland
  2. Consiglio Nazionale Della Ricerche, Italy
  3. Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium
  4. Chalmers Tekniska Hoegskola Sweden
  5. University of Oxford, UK
  6. University College London, UK
  7. Eigenossische Technische Hochschule Zurich, Switzerland
  8. Max Planck Gesellschaft Zur Forderung der Wissenshaften, Germany

The purpose of the IREG Guidelines for Stakeholders of Academic Rankings is to provide recommendations for appropriate interpretations, uses and applications of rankings by potential interested parties, including students and parents, institutions of higher education, policymakers, quality assurance and funding organizations, employers and the media. Specific recommendations have been formulated for each group of stakeholders.
