The Indonesian Research, Technology and has announced new university rankings. This comes at a time of growing concern about the poor quality of the country’s universities and their lacklustre performance in the global rankings. There have been proposals to recruit international academics to lead Indonesian universities in the hope that this will lead to higher standards. The new rankings classify 2,141 non-vocational higher education institutions in five clusters. It is noticeable that the leading universities are mainly found in Java and Sumatra and few in the eastern regions such as Bali, Sulawesi and Irian jaya. Of the thirteen universities in the first cluster, ten are located in Java, two in Sumatra and only one in Eastern Indonesia.

The top ten universities are:

  1. Institut Teknologi Bandung
  2. Universitas Gadjah Mada
  3. Institut Pertanian Bogor
  4. Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember
  5. Universitas Indonesia
  6. Universitas Diponegoro
  7. Universitas Airlangga
  8. Universitas Hasanuddin
  9. Universitas Brawijaya
  10. Universitas Padjadjaran.

The ranking is based on four criteria: Input (weighting 15%), Process (25%), Output (25%), and Outcome (25%).

The ministry has also published a list of vocational institutions comprising polytechnics and academies.

The top ten are:

  1. Politeknik Electronika Negeri Surabaya
  2. Politeknik Negeri Bandung
  3. Politeknik Negeri Malang
  4. Politeknik Negeri Semarang
  5. Politeknik Pertanian Negeri Payakumbuh
  6. Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang
  7. Politeknik Negeri Jakarta
  8. Politeknik Negeri Padang
  9. Politeknik Pertanian Negeri Pangkajene Kepulauan
  10. Politeknik Negeri Bali.
