Universities in Taiwan have excelled in teaching and research although in recent years they have fallen behind some of the major universities on the mainland. Recently, Global Views Monthly, a local business magazine in Taiwan, and the scientific and academic data company Elsevier announced a three-year plan to rank Taiwanese universities. There will be six criteria: Research achievement, Teaching performance, Internationalization, Academic-Industry Collaboration, Societal impact, Financial impact. Data will be drawn from the Scopus research database and from SciVal Analytics.
According to Mary Yang, President and Editor-in-Chief of the magazine, the agreement followed the positive response to a pilot ranking conducted in 2018, the results of which were announced at the agreement signing ceremony.
She stated that:
“Rankings provide an evidence-based and objective view of the academic performance of higher-education institutions that can be practically benchmarked against for parents and students to make informed choices instead of relying on subjective criteria such as admission scores or perception of a university which were commonly used in the past,"
